The study on the process as a factor and condition of the renovation of Samchuk Market
Community showed that the process led to changes from the Decadent period to the
Restoration period. It took over a decade to start up new pages of the history of Samchuk
Market Community. Looking back to the time when the number of customers dwindled and the
market reached its near death stage, the place was run-down and sad. The local people were
also threatened by the public plans to demolish the dilapidated one hundred year-old structure
for modern commercial buildings. As there were no ways to walk back, the local people then
grouped as a team with their natural leader from a smaller into a larger group in order to
oppose and vow to move forward facilitating each other as stated, “Having Problems Creating a
Union.” They decided to work together to renovate the market by organizing supportive
activities of old value and traditional way of life. The most successful event was “Yummy at
Samchuk.” Many people visited the market to eat and enjoy authentic surroundings. Yet, it was
not enough to develop the sustainable community.
Looking carefully at the historical background of the Samchuk community, it was
pointed out that there were many levels of kinship system in the community. This kinship
system established how all members of a community were closely related. They could make
connections with respect to genetic ties, races, ethnicity and neighbours. The community itself
took hold of the reins. Being alert, receptive to changes and, therefore, quick to be united, the
Samchuk Market Restoration Committee was appointed to solve problems incessantly.
However, the work went on too slowly.
The turning point took place when the NGO, the Chumchon Thai foundation,
proposed “the Project for Livable Communities and Cities.” Though the Samchuk Market
Community and their leader were slightly skeptical of joining the NGO project, they got excited
about it. The Chumchon Thai foundation conducted feasibility studies on the community before
starting the project. The foundation was convinced that the community was equipped with
leaders, community culture and refined architecture which were greatly important elements to
help meet the success of the project. In the year B.E. 2546 (2003 A.D.), the market was selected
by the foundation as one of the twelve (12) navigable towns
