that should be preserved. In joining the project, the community and their leaders were
proved to be open-minded and ready for changes while the Chumchon Thai Foundation was a
real friend who was always willing to support the local people. Opening up to the local people,
the Foundation provided a platform where opinions can be voiced, thus leading to a most
praiseworthy string of activities. The local people were encouraged to have outside experiences
by observation tours. They could gain new life with an injection of fresh ideas. It could be said
that they met the bright light at the end of the tunnel. They could compare the actual situation
they were facing with the one they had just observed and select the best for adaptation.
Community participation was the basic factor that could not be missed i.e. thinking together of
providing something for the sake of the whole community, sharing of work based on their role
and their capacity rooted in knowledge studying and consulting with experts in order to gain
community standardization. To cite as examples, in improving physical surroundings of the
community, the community architectural team set up the master plan and let the owner of
each house decide what should be or not be done. Every opinion mattered. Matters were
settled by consensus.
As a result of the community’s growing consciousness for their dedication
and love of the area, the preservation of Samchuk market was put into action.
These
conservation and development guidelines for physical area of the

were necessary to support and promote social and cultural identities for the heritage of the
community.
Lesson learned from the Samchuk Market Community pointed out that the
revitalized community was especially dependent on the willpower of locals and their strength
as a community. There was no ready-made formula in reviving the market to maintain the
original “retro” concept. The dedication to work with the real objectives and goals led to a
string of activities within the community. Like a jigsaw puzzle, we started by finding reference
images that we could conceivably expand on and slowly joining other pieces together until it
was done. Experiences gained were praiseworthy. It should not be lost because the body of
knowledge was hidden behind for the benefit of the community and alike.
