ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to explore the historical background of Samchuk Market
Community and to reexamine the process as a factor and condition of the renovation of
Samchuk Market Community.
Research Methodology
was to
review
literature from facts collected by the local
people along with an interview of the Samchuk Market Restoration Committee, meetings of
resource persons, academics and local people of Samchuk Market Community in order to have
a collection of data, validity examination and data analysis.
Research Result
revealed the story of a Thai community with the Chinese ancestors
who sold goods for a living for over three (3) generations. Opening up their trade, the Chinese
vendors illustrated pages of historical changes to the locality divided into three (3) periods namely
1) Pioneering
period 2) Prosperous period and 3) Decadent period. From the Pioneering period to
the Prosperous period, they had established, at Ban Sampeng, a market which was a commercial
community. It turned out to be one of the most bustling markets alongside the Tajeen River. This
was a main thoroughfare in the region. However, it got to the point that the market was on the
verge of collapse due to few customers and no trade from outsiders. The economy that had once
flourished began to deteriorate. This was the end of the first part of local history portrayed in the
Samchuk Market Community.
