EXTENDED SUMMARY
1. Introduction
Lanna Music is a folk music of northern Thailand indicated uniquely by not
only lyric but also musical instruments such as
pee
(oboe)
salo
(fiddle)
phin
(lute) and
sueng
.
The turm “So” in
lanna
culture
means singing which is a folk style. That “
So
”
is very famous in lanna area, it is always used for entertainment and inherited until
now. There are many kinds of
so
:
so chiang mai, so longnan, so ngeo
or
so phama
etc. So singer called
chang so
always sings by using a melodic line that is
accompanied by different instruments. In case of Chaing Mai group it uses
pee chum
and
sueng
, but Nan province group uses phin (local accent is “pin”), salo and sueng.
The culture of Chaing Rai is more ancient than these of Chaing Mai. So we
can assume that a form of
so
in Chaing Rai’s tradition could be a original style of
so
’s
chaing mai
and
so long nan
as well. There are many skillful
singers (chang so)
throughout living in Chaing Rai province. About field study, we found that Mr.
Seetuan Sornnoi is the most well-known as a great master of
chang so
in Chaing Rai
province. By his ability of
so
, he indicates his high skillful improvisation by sweet-
sounding of melodic line, various lyric that conceals a usefulness to a listener.
By the reasons above,
the research title is Wong Saw, a Lanna Traditional
Vocal Music: A Case Study of Seetuan Sornnoi’s Style,Chiang Rai Province,
Northern Thailand. The object of study is to indicate role of

ensemble in society
and its melodic characteristics which is unique, prominent and as an innovation of
so
in Chaing Rai province. The result of this study will be able to be an information
guide for forward study of lanna songs.
