Abstract
The research purposes were 1) Survey and collect the local wisdom
resources concerning making cart in the Upper Northern Part of Thailand 2)
Analyze the body of knowledge concerning making cart and the style of cart
and 3) Study the roll of cart that related to the context of Northern culture.
The population was the expert in knowledge, making and repairing cart
in 8 provincees of the Northern Part composed of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai,
Phrae, Nan, Phayao, Lampang, Lamphun, and Maehongson. The informal
interview was used for data collecting and then analyzed of data in the field of
knowledge used for cart instruction, type of cart and cultural context.
The results of this research were as follows :-
1. The sources of the cart making were found in Phrae, Lampang,
Lamphun, Maehongson Provinces and the source of the cart repaired were
found in Phayao, Maehongson, Chiang Rai, Lamphun Provinces.
2. The craftsmen who make cart that still living were found 3 in Phrae, 3
in Lampang, 3 in Maehongson Provinces and the craftsmen who repaired cart
that still living were found 1 in Phayao, 3 in Maehongson Provinces.
3. The type of cart that separated by animal to hitch were the pack ox
cart and the pack water buffalo cart but separated by figure were Phrae cart,
Lampang cart, Lamphun cart and Maehongson cart.
4. The components of the cart were wheel, axle, beam and cover. The
method to make cart were made two wheels first, put axle with wheels and
then put cover on the top.
5. The knowledge from making cart in the material were teakwood,
Burma Padauk wood, red sandalwood and iron. The science knowledge were
beam, wheel and axle and metal expansion. The cart were used as the vehicle
and lodging.
6. The culture context of carts in the Northern Part were the
characteristic with wood craft or painting on the front and the back side of the
carts display pot style with climber, nagas and elephants. The carts were used
for the “Glong Luang” (big drum) loading by the temple for competition in
several places.
7. The old carts were repaired for field decorate and the separate parts
were used as furniture and pavilion.
