Abstract
This research and development of Ganoptingtong Dance of Surin Province aimed to
1) study on the background and interpretation of Ganoptingtong Dance of Surin Province, 2)
develop the form of dance, music, song and costume of the dance and 3) propose a learning
document for local program on “Ganoptingtong Dance”. The methodology of the research
composed of collecting of data from related personnel in 2 districts: 1) Muang District, data
was collected from Mrs.Pongsri Thonglor, Mrs.Kaenjan Namwat, Mrs.Sujin Thonglor,
Mr.Kamonroj Niwatbanharn and Mr.Tongchai Samsi, 2) Prasart District, data was collected
from three descendants of Mr.Then Gagarndee and Mr.Huan Trongsoondee, Mr.Yan
Yeesoonsri and Mr.Sompong Sakaret. The outcome of the study was applied to developed
“The model of dance, music, song and costume for Ganoptingtong Dance”. The model was
proposed to related personnel and 30 experts to give some suggestions in order to improve
the model and then the developed model of the dance, music, song and costume was included
in the learning document for the local program of “Ganoptingtong Dance” of Surin Province.
Research Results
1) The Background of Ganoptingtong Dance
Ganoptingtong Dance was imitated from the life cycle of the mantis. It is a
performance for amusement and enjoyment of people in a village, then extends to district and
province. It was shown in front of the throne of King and Queen of Thailand. The dance was
suspended for a period of time and then returns to interest of people. There are three periods
of the dance:
Period 1 The assemble of Ganoptingtong Dance
Around 2480 B.C, Mr.Then Trakarndee went to Cambodia with the salt and
fermented fish caravan. He impressively observed the movements of the mantis while
courting and mating and wanted to perform the dance to audiences. His idea was transferred
to Mr.Huan Trongsoondee, a leader of Rambao Gantruam group, and they collaboratively
performed the dance. The dance was observed by Mr.Yan Yeesoondee, a former headmaster
of Ban Phothong school and he joined the group as a performer with Mr.Then while Mr.Huan
was playing a pipe. The dance was performed with immediate lyric and there was no specific
dreses.
Period 2 Contribution of the Dance by Mr.Sanor Moolasart (2506-2540 B.C.)
During this period, the Ganoptingtong Dance from Plai subdistrict was proposed to
province and national performance level by Mr.Sanor Mullasart, the former district chief
officer of Prasart District. The dance has become famous to present and some improvements
