Researcher: Associate Professor Dr. Punnee Bualek
Abstract
The objectives of this research on the Bang Khlo Neighborhood were: 1) to study
the Thai musical heritage of Bang Khlo Neighborhood from the beginning to the present
and 2) to study the problems and obstruction in its conservation. This research used an
historical approach by analysis and description of the material that was collected from
documents and interviewing. The Bang Khlo Neighborhood was the major source of the
material in this research.
The study found that the Bang Khlo neighborhood was the fertilized garden area
on the Chaophaya river side in the past. The prior group locating here escaped from the
devastating war of Ayutthaya. According to the evidence it was found that there were
two temples constructed in 1770 in the Thonburi period 3 years after the fall of
Ayutthaya. In the Early Rattanakosin period many groups of people moved in and
located here as the gardeners. The tranquil way of gardeners’ lives were gradually
changed when they were faced with the process of Bangkok’s modernization, urbanization
and industrialization in history.
Thai traditional music was the distinct culture at Bang Khlo Neighborhood . In
the past the gardeners here played the music in both religious and life ceremonies or
even for taking pleasure . Because this area was on the Chaophaya river edge, the people
could exchange their products and culture with other communities. The musical
knowledge and ability here was exchanged with and assimilated by the culture of the
people around the Thai Basin. The playing of Thai traditional music in this area was
diminished when the surrounding conditions were changed.
