Abstract
The purposes of the research, National Artist Wisdom of Mr. Manop Yarana, were
to study the biography, dramatic arts works, identity, inspiration, processes of creation
and impartation, and impacts or influences of Mr. Manop Yarana. The research
methodology used was qualitative research methodology. The data collected were from
documents’ syntheses, interview and group discussion.
The findings of this research were as follows:
Biography:
Mr. Manop Yarana was born on September 5
th
, 2474 B.E. in
Chiang Mai Province. When he was young, he gained knowledge of self-defending from
a novice called Khroo Nen, local drumming, martial arts dance called Choeng and
traditional dancing from senior teachers, Senior Abbot Khroo Baa Mahaawan, Khroo
Kham, Khoon Phrom, Khroo Phachern Suwanrungsri, Khroo Hla Kuma, Khroo Mai
Aphibarn, Khroo Rod Aksorntab, Khroo Songmuang Aphibarn, Khroo Phol Yarana, and
Khroo Suchin Rattanakhamnual.
Dramatic arts works: He uses his home as a dramatic arts centre to teach
youths and any person who is interested in northern Lanna Thai performing arts for free
of charge since 2496 B.E. In 2538 B.E., Chiang Mai College of Dramatic Arts appointed
him as expert of traditional performing arts. Moreover, he was invited to teach interested
students and people at some institutions, sectors, organization and communities. As he
had intentions to impart his wisdom of traditional performing arts to generations, he was
appointed national artist of performing arts (traditional performing arts- dancing) in 2548
B.E.
Identity: His outstanding identities were as follows: (1) Identity of teaching career
(2) Identity of artists, and (3) Identity in maintaining northern tradition and in using
Buddha teaching in drumming.
Wisdom: His outstanding wisdoms were as follows: (1) Wisdom of the arts of
fighting with bare hands, swords as in Sword Dance, spears as in Spear dance, wooden
hammers, and pointed sticks (2) Wisdom of northern Lanna Thai drumming as in Klong
Chaiya Mongkhol, or Chaiya Mongkhol Drumming, Klong Buucha, or Buucha Drumming,
