A Cultural Combination : A Case Study on The Performing Arts Developed
from Ancient Khom’s Carved Stone’s Architectural Pictures in Thailand and
Cambodia

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to investigate the feature of a cultural combination and
the factor functioned a cultural combination on the performing arts developed from Khom’s
carved stone’s architectural pictures. The scope of the study were Absornsaran dance, Surindra
Rajabhat University, Thailand and Absara dance, The Fine Arts Department, Cambodia. These
used the qualitative research by observe and interview and used the theory of symbol system and
Kober’s interpretation.
The results was found that the feature of a cultural combination, Absornsaran dance and
Absara dance got influence from local culture, India culture and Khom culture. Absornsaran
dance of Thailand was horizontal combination passed concept from Surindra Rajabhat University
expanded to the area and applied with local linked to education system. The style of dance, there
are three combination were the style of dance from royal, local and carve picture of Prasat
Srikhoraphoom and Prasat Nakhonwat. The musuc used Kantrum, the costume imitated from
Absorn’s picture of Prasat Srikhoraphoom and Prasat Nakhonwat. Absara dance of Cambodia
was vertical combination by The Fine Arts Department determined the dance’s style, music and
costume before spread to people. The dance’s style was the style from ancient dance used for
devoted the god, the music used a kind of Thai orchestra instruments, the costume imitated from
Absorn’s picture of Prasat Nakhonwat. The factor functioned a cultural combination were internal
factor and external factor, for the environment factor found that there are various ethic groups
came to this region in the past along with India civilization linked to local cultured Khom culture.
Combodian ordered Absara protect the King in order to get more merit. In Thailand Absara was
Phra Mae Thoranee, the symbol of plentiful matching with the way of life for villagers and
adapted by used natural environment liked with the belief, society, concept, value or goal found
that human had the idea system used the ghost or god made the music, gesture and took the carve
of Prasat Khom created the goodness and beauty for people live together. The factor of
